Before I start on my post for March, I would just like to give a shout out to my Japanese friends who are reading this to drop me an email if you guys are alright. My thoughts are with you, your families and the people affected by this disaster. Please stay safe!
Just the other day, I watched Chase Javis's conversation with Vincent Laforet and they touched on something that I really agreed on.
That if only clients would look beyond a photographer's portfolio and give them the creative space to try something different. They discuss about how clients look for you because you are good at certain stuff but never take the gamble for you to try something different.
I can so relate to what they are saying because as my clients would go through my portfolio and go 'oh so you shot for this this this and that event!'
After some thought, they give me an assignment -a similar event that I had already done. Whatever happened to the 'I don't care how you do it, just do it' kind of mindset? Why won't clients trust an artist to come up with something brilliant even though they had never done it before?
I mean I am just dying to meet a client that goes 'yea your event stuff are good now lets see you shoot a concert. And I know I will do a great job shooting a concert! Just that I always get assigned to events...
If only clients are willing to take the gamble and just trust photographers/ film makers *insert profession* to come up with something amazing even though it is not within their portfolios. After all, this is art and if one of Laforet's dream is to get a client to let him shoot Lady Gaga's music video, my dream would be to get a client to let me shoot Eric Clapton's concert or just any other concert for now.
Who knows the DP of Lady Gaga's next music video could be Laforet himself and I would totally look forward to that because Laforet is such an amazing film maker!
Eitherways, it's going to be a busy march for me as I look forward to traveling and shooting in April. Hope you guys are well and shooting! As always, my thoughts are with all who are affect by the disaster.
Take care and stay safe!
